I went to church this morning for the first time since I moved to Katy. I've been researching area churches for some time online and weeded out many of them. Most of their websites offer past sermons to watch or listen to, which helped considerably. Also, the ones whose major focus on the home page was money were also eliminated. And I didn't want to go to a giant church, of which there are many. So I zeroed in on an offshoot of St. Peter's Methodist Church (west campus), which meets at the high school down the street.

I expected it to be casual, which it was, and I liked that aspect. The service consisted of just music (a little too rock and roll for my taste) and the sermon, or message. During all the music, I decided that this was not the church for me and I was also disappointed that the young pastor, whose message I had seen online, wasn't preaching today, but instead it was a friend of his. Well, hands down, it was one of the best sermons I've ever heard and the subject was tolerance. The main gist was that we don't have to tolerate things (addiction, abuse, etc.), but we do have to tolerate, pray for, and love the people. In other words, another take on "hate the sin, not the sinner." I was surprised that the example he used more than once was Obama... does that give you any idea about the political makeup of Katy? He insisted that we don't have to love what Obama does, but we still have to pray for him and love him as a person. I liked it because I hear the words "Obama" and "hate" in the same sentence way too often. It bothers me.

So now I'm torn. I think I'll try it again and maybe the music will grow on me, but I do love the old time hymns. Also, the congregation, if they even call them that now, was mainly young families. Not that there's anything wrong with that. This is definitely something to ponder...
