Mea culpa, mea culpa! Sweet Glory had absolutely nothing to do with Simon's behavior. As I was sitting on the couch last night, Simon jumped up and was frantically trying to dig behind the cushions, apparently trying to hide back there. He knocked several cushions off and then jumped up on the chair where the sheets had been (that's right, "had been" - I finally put them away). I tried to cuddle him and he let me for about 30 seconds, trembling and panting the whole time. And then he retreated to the farthest corner of the closet, burrowing under the clothes.
So I took him to the vet this afternoon as nothing had changed today. She said that typically this type of behavior indicates pain, but she checked him thoroughly and couldn't find anything. She recommended blood work and urine analysis which costs over $200, so I asked if I could just give him some type of sedative to get him through the weekend and see how he does. She agreed and said she'd write him a prescription for Xanax, which I just happen to have (but don't take anymore). And get this... he takes the same dosage as I did! That certainly seems weird since I weigh more than five times what he does, but I'm willing to try it. And if he's not better Monday, back we'll go.
