I had a mentor meeting at the elementary school today and got my assignments for the year. I'll be seeing a 1st grade boy and 4th grade girl who are brother and sister. The counselor suggested that we don't ask why their teachers recommended them for the program at least until we've met with the kids a few times. The reasons they might be in the program include behavior, home life, poor grades, or excess absences. I'm guessing that mine have issues at home since they're from the same family. But I could be wrong and I start next week, so I should be able to figure it out soon enough. I'm looking forward to getting into this again.
