It was a wild ride today... and not for me. I had a shower to attend this morning for Kay's daughter, Natalie, who was expecting her first baby (Kay's first grandchild) on July 16th. Imagine my surprise when Kay called this morning at 8 and said Natalie's water had broken and they were at the hospital. The shower started at 11, so Kay assured me she would be there because Nat was only dilated one cm. I got the next call at 10:50 as I was almost to the restaurant and Kay said the baby had been born at 9:45! But she was still coming to the shower to represent Natalie. The shower was wonderful with delicious food and drinks, but alas, sans new mom.
Now most of you may not know this, but I've been terrified of babies since I was very young. I always froze when some new mother wanted me to hold her child and usually tried to excuse myself. When I saw this cutie in her mother's arms (who I did not know), I started making faces at her and she reached out her little arms to me. My initial reaction was to walk away, but I decided what the heck and took her. Her name is Layla, so I started singing Eric Clapton's song to her and every time I sang, she put her head on my chest. If I stopped, she moved away. I cannot explain how much joy that gave me... something I've never felt before. So now I plan on interfering in Kay's grandma duties so I can do this again with little James. Good thing I can't get pregnant at this age!
