Today was to be my last day with Cali, but alas, she was absent. School's out on Thursday so her teacher asked if I could come tomorrow. I can't at our normal time, but I told her I definitely wanted to stop in and say goodbye. And although I'm breaking the rules for mentors, her family is on food stamps and she always brings Lunchables that they buy at the gas station. So I bought them a $50 gift card at HEB, our local grocery store, hoping they'll use it to buy food. I suppose it's really just to make me feel better.

Cali's been telling me for some time that they're moving to Tomall (about 30 miles away) this summer, but I know from experience that poor children say that a lot. I suppose it's because their parents are trying to figure out what to do. If she stays here, I'm hoping I can be her mentor again next year. We'll see...
