I started tutoring a new student today... Karen, a seventh grade girl who is in Pre-AP math and probably shouldn't be. Her mother came in with her and read during the session. I wasn't very happy with how it went because Karen obviously didn't want to be here. I think it might have been better had her mom not been here, but can't know that for sure. But as they were leaving the mother said she had recently gotten a call from the teacher saying that Karen's average is 54 and she should be moved into a regular class. And her parents just aren't having it. She told the teacher that they would get a tutor, assuming that I can fix it, but I think it's doubtful. I'm so accustomed to parents like that who, for some reason, would rather their child struggle in an advanced class rather than be successful in a regular class. I'll certainly work on it and probably shouldn't be making any snap judgements, but I'm very skeptical. Time will tell.
